We are a 501 c 3 organization with a vision for the future of the community that will offer sustainable employment, a well-trained workforce, economically revitalized neighborhoods, adequate transportation and affordable housing.
We partner with the under-resourced in the Greater Fredericksburg area to meet their needs for more sustainable employment, adequate transportation, and affordable housing by providing educational growth, long-term committed relationships, economic development, leadership building, and revitalization to the community.
At present, Open Hand operates three youth-focused programs: the Summer Youth Workers Program; the Mentoring Program; and PREP (Partnership for Readiness Education Program.).
Students who qualify for the Summer Youth Workers Program are employed by area businesses for eight weeks. They are also matched with screened and trained volunteer mentors. In addtion, these students receive continuing education in life skills, character formation, employment processes, job skills, financial literacy and leadership.
Open Hand currently operates the PREP program in partnership with James Monroe High School and plans to add a second program in Spotsylvania County high schools for the academic year 2010-2011. Skills taught are those of the Summer Youth Worker Program with the addition of a community service component. Eligible students will receive academic credit.
We enjoy valuable partnerships with employers, professionals, and agencies as we expand our program to serve the under-resourced youth in Planning District 16.
