The original Tun Tavern and brewery in Philadelphia\, PA is regarded as the founding place of the Marine Corps. On November 10\, 1775\, upon being commissioned by the Continental Congress to raise two Battalions of Marines\, Samuel Nicholas went directly to Tun Tavern and appointed its owner\, Robert Mullan\, the first Marine recruiter.
