Description
Why do so few people realize that the novel "Roots" is a local story to Spotsylvania? Kunta Kinte, featured in Alex Haley’s 1976 novel “Roots: The Saga of an American Family," was a slave at Waller Plantation right here in Spotsylvania County. The late author’s nephew, Chris Haley, Director of Maryland’s Legacy of Slavery program, will address the history of slavery in Spotsylvania and its “Roots” connection.
Mr. Haley will be joined by Dr. Charles Chavis, Assistant Professor of Conflict Resolution and History and Director of African and African American Studies at George Mason University, for a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Scott Ackerman, Professor of History and Coordinator of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Germanna Community College.
