May 9 Evening with an Expert: The Marquis de Lafayette, a True Friend of The Cause |
The Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) is pleased to announce its first 2024 Evening with an Expert lecture, The Marquis de Lafayette, a True Friend of the Cause. The Marquis de Lafayette was a committed abolitionist, and often urged his American friends to end the system of slavery. He joined the French abolitionist organization “Society of the Friends of the Blacks,” and often advocated for Black emancipation in his correspondence with Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington. In 1842, English abolitionist Thomas Clarkson wrote of Lafayette: “He was a true friend of the cause.” Dr. Gaila Sims, Curator of African American History and Special Projects will speak about the Marquis’s abolitionist influences and his beliefs on the institution of slavery. Evening with an Expert will take place Thursday, May 9 at the FAM (907 Princess Anne St), from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm and will conclude with a light reception with the speaker in FAM’s newest exhibit Lafayette’s World: Revolutionary Ideals and the Limits of Freedom. Lecture tickets are $20 for non-members and $10 for members. Visit (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-marquis-de-lafayette-a-true-friend-of-the-cause-tickets-852486438887?aff=oddtdtcreator) to reserve your spot. Lafayette’s World: Revolutionary Ideals and the Limits of Freedom is sponsored in part by Virginia Humanities, in partnership with the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission. For more information please either contact Theresa Cramer at tcramer@famva.org, or visit us at www.famva.org. The FAM collects, researches, interprets, teaches, and preserves the history, heritage, and culture of the Fredericksburg region. We serve a diverse community through a commitment to inclusion, integrity, credibility, and relevance. We will facilitate an understanding and appreciation of how the acts of those who preceded us have shaped this community and the nation at large—providing both lessons and inspiration as we work together to forge a greater community. |

May 15 Ribbon Cutting: RSQ Training |
RSQ Training was established by a father who found himself in a situation where he had to administer emergency medical care to his son. Following his retirement from the USMC in order to provide medical care for his son at home, he aimed to empower his community to be better prepared to assist one another. Leveraging his expertise as a Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief officer, a Search and Rescue technician, and an emergency planning specialist, he launched RSQ Training with the goal of fostering resilient communities. RSQ Training serves as a resource to help individuals become the heroes their communities rely on.
RSQ Training provides two distinct types of services: emergency preparedness and emergency response, offering both training and consulting. Our preparedness services cater to individuals, families, and businesses, encompassing CPR and other essential training, as well as consulting and training for the development of emergency action plans. On the other hand, our response training is technical, designed to equip individuals with the skills necessary to respond effectively in emergency situations. |

About the Laurie A. Wideman Enterprising Woman's Award
The Laurie A. Wideman Enterprising Woman's Award is an award presented annually by the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce to a member of the Chamber's Network of Enterprising Women (CNEW). This award recognizes a woman with an independent, energetic spirit and readiness to act in business and in the community. She has a great passion for the quality of life in our region and leads with values of the highest level of integrity and honesty.
This award is named for Laurie A. Wideman, an exceptional woman in the community who was truly an enterprising woman. Laurie worked tirelessly behind the scenes for the many difference causes that she believed in, supported others in their endeavors, and had a true passion for her community and its quality of life. She served on the Chamber's Board of Directors, Leadership Advisory Board, and chaired the monthly Stafford Roundtable. Laurie was a winner of the Chamber's Small Business of the Year Award and was involved in numerous Chamber committees including the Chamber's Network of Enterprising Women (CNEW), tourism, and transportation. As active as she was with the Chamber, Laurie also served on the Board of Directors for United Way, was a former president of the Stafford Business Exchange, and represented Stafford County on the Regional Tourism Task Force.
This award has been developed based on Laurie's personality, her beliefs, and her standards.
