- Biweekly living allowance of $957.46, pre-tax
- 80 hours each personal and sick leave
- Holidays on the state calendar, typically 116 hours / year
- Option of a health benefit plan (essentially a basic insurance plan for members without insurance) or a healthcare allowance (reimbursement for copays and other eligible costs for members who already have insurance), enrollment in either plan is free
- Childcare allowance, if applicable
- Relocation stipend, if applicable
Upon successful completion of their term, members will also receive:
- One year of non-competitive eligibility for federal employment
- Option of either a Segal education award ($7,395) OR a cash stipend (~$1,800).
Requirements for VISTA members are:
- Must be 18 or older on their start date
- Must hold one of the following citizenship/legal residency statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Alien, and persons legally residing in a state that have any of the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status
- Must pass a criminal history check (conducted by AmeriCorps)
- Must be able to commit to full-time service for one year; other jobs or commitments such as education are allowable but require approval and cannot conflict with the VISTA’s service schedule.
Applicants for this position should have excellent writing skills, strong computer skills, and communication skills by phone, in-person, or email. Applicants should be motivated with a passion for helping youth in the community through capacity building. Applicants should have a valid Virginia Driver’s license and vehicle insurance, or other means of reliable transportation. Applicants should have a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
Anticipated Schedule and Location:
The position is hybrid and upon on-boarding, the specific schedule can be determined with the Supervisor. Requires 50% in-person work at the office, with 50% remote work available.
Typical service hours will be 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The Member will be serving at 325A Wallace Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401 when in the office.
Goal of the Project:
The goal of this VISTA project is to expand capacity to serve youth in Planning District 16 by enhancing volunteer engagement, strengthening resource development, and increasing opportunities for enriching mentorship activities. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will help build the organization’s capacity by promoting volunteerism, evaluating data for fundraising and grant opportunities, and expanding match activity programming. The Member will do this by researching systems, improving grant application processes, and securing partnerships to enhance the experience for the youth we serve.
Objective 1 of the Assignment:
Collaborate with Serve Virginia to support national service, volunteerism, and civic engagement in Planning District 16 (City of Fredericksburg, Counties of Caroline, King George, Stafford, and Spotsylvania).
Member Activities:
- Promote volunteer recognition programs on social media and the newsletter, such as the Governor’s Volunteerism Awards and the Serve Virginia Honor Roll.
- Conduct outreach to engage partner organizations (such as Kiwanis, Lions Club, or local schools) in National Days of Service and Serve Virginia min-grant programs.
- Assist in the development of an Alumni Engagement Plan in preparation for the 60th anniversary of Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Fredericksburg (2027).
- Assist in enhancing the Recruitment Plan to increase the pool of potential volunteers by making it an actionable and measurable document.
- Attend outreach opportunities and host booths related to potential BBBS volunteer recruitment.
- Identify and interview Big Brothers and Big Sisters volunteers and AmeriCorps alumni with inspiring Stories of Service and write blogs and/or video these interviews.
Objective 2 of the Assignment:
Facilitate resource development efforts by reviewing current donor lists, researching potential systems, and improving grant applications.
Member Activities:
- Assess the effectiveness of existing methods of solicitation and determine strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
- Assist in the development of a Marketing Plan that sets a plan for how various media formats can reach specific target audiences.
- Develop a sustainable social media and blog calendar with standard holidays and important dates and generate content to be published.
- Research potential CRM systems to be used for a donor database.
- Compile a list of alumni, current and past individual donors, current and past board members, and current and past sponsors.
- Develop standard template language to put in grants by reviewing past grant applications, local community data, and the current BBBS Message Guide.
- Apply for 4-7 new grants that could increase capacity to conduct programming or to improve operations.
- Fill in the Master Planning calendar with important resource development dates, such as key moments in cash flow, grants, fundraising events, and outreach events. Update or draft any associated policies and procedures.
Objective 3 of the Assignment:
Increase the availability of match activities by partnering with local organizations and businesses to create monthly, yearly, or permanent opportunities for match activities that will be sustainable over time.
Member Activities:
- Increase capacity to host more Match Activities for Bigs and Littles by contacting local businesses to secure in-kind donations, deals, and potential event opportunities, as well as organize workshops by professionals, such as financial literacy.
- Create a Big for a Day model that could engage youth on the waitlist and potential volunteers, including a proposed policy and procedure that fits within our existing standards.
- Coordinate planning of potential activities by contacting facility, arranging for volunteers, and creating informational flyers.
- Coordinate Holiday Assistance donation drive by contacting Toys for Tots and other in-kind donors and arranging for volunteers.
- Fill in the Master Planning calendar with important match activity dates, such as key moments in planning, communications, and follow-through. Update or draft any associated policies and procedures.
