In the past few decades, archaeologists and preservationists have dedicated extensive efforts to fill the gaps in Fredericksburg’s historical narrative by exploring sites associated with marginalized communities. These sites include the quarters where enslaved people resided, the workplaces of indentured individuals, the businesses established by the free, and the dwellings of those navigating family life in a divided society. Dr. Kerri Barile Tambs will illustrate how through these excavations, researchers have uncovered significant insights into the lives of African Americans in Fredericksburg in order to ensure a more inclusive storyline for the future.
